Signaling is a different problem from navigation. Navigation is about you finding your way; signaling is about somebody else finding you, and the methods that work best are the ones that carry furthest with the least effort from a person who may be cold, injured, or running out of daylight.

Signaling is what you fall back on when communication is unavailable, and never trigger a distress signal unless you genuinely need assistance.

Why Three
Three repetitions is the internationally recognized distress signal, and the reason it works is that natural sounds and lights rarely occur in threes at regular intervals.
A single shout could be anything. Three evenly spaced blasts read as deliberate, which is what separates a signal from ambient noise to someone hearing it at distance.
Two of anything is the standard response meaning help is coming, so hearing two blasts back is information rather than an echo.
A Whistle Beats Shouting
A whistle carries considerably further than the human voice, works when your throat is dry or you are exhausted, and costs almost no energy to use.
Shouting is loud for a short time and then it is not, because a voice fails quickly under stress and dehydration. A whistle sounds the same on the hundredth blast as the first.
Pealess whistles are the sensible choice, since a whistle with a pea inside can freeze or jam when wet. The whistle should live on a pack strap or around your neck rather than in a pocket, because a signaling device you have to dig for is one you will not use promptly.

Visual Signals
A signal mirror
A mirror flash can be seen at considerable distance in clear conditions and needs sunlight to work at all. Purpose-made mirrors have an aiming aperture that makes directing the flash far easier than improvising.
Bright fabric on the ground
Anything colorful laid out in open ground creates a signal that works whether or not you are awake. Geometric shapes read as human-made in a way scattered items do not.
A headlamp or torch
At night a light is visible from a long way off. Flashing three times at intervals preserves battery, and a strobe function where available draws the eye better than steady light.
Contrast against the background

Get Into the Open First
Signals only work if there is a line of sight or sound between you and whoever is looking. Tree cover blocks both, and a person under a canopy can be almost impossible to spot from the air.
Clearings, ridgelines, and open slopes are all better than dense woodland or a narrow gully. Sound also travels differently in terrain, and a gully can trap it entirely.
Balance that against safety and energy. Moving to open ground is worth doing if it is close and safe; crossing difficult terrain to reach a better signaling position rarely is.
Electronic Options
A personal locator beacon transmits a distress signal to search and rescue authorities via satellite, works without cell coverage, and requires no subscription. It sends one message and nothing else.
Satellite messengers do the same job with two-way communication, so rescuers can ask questions and you can describe your situation. They need a subscription.
A phone is worth trying even without visible signal, since emergency calls can sometimes route through any available network. Moving to higher ground occasionally finds coverage where none existed below.

Fire and Smoke
A fire serves several purposes at once: warmth, morale, and visibility at night. Three fires in a triangle is a recognized distress arrangement where you have the material and the space to build them safely.
Smoke works during the day, and green vegetation or damp material added to a fire produces considerably more of it than dry wood.
The obvious caution is fire risk. In dry conditions this is a genuinely dangerous option, and starting a wildfire while lost is a substantially worse outcome than not being seen for another few hours.
Ground-to-Air Signals
Searchers looking from a helicopter or fixed-wing aircraft see shapes rather than people, and a person waving is much harder to spot than a deliberate pattern laid out on the ground.
A large X made from gear, rocks, or trampled snow indicates a need for medical assistance. A single large V means assistance required generally. Both work because straight lines and sharp angles do not occur naturally in most terrain.
Size is what matters most. A signal needs to be large enough to read from altitude, which in practice means considerably bigger than feels necessary at ground level.

Conserve Everything
Signal at intervals rather than continuously. Batteries, energy, and voice are all finite, and a search may take longer than you expect.
Concentrate effort when it is most likely to be useful: when you hear aircraft or voices, at dawn and dusk when searchers are most active, and when you are in open ground.
Leave passive signals working while you rest. Bright fabric on the ground and gear laid out in a pattern signal continuously without any effort from you, which is the whole advantage of them.
