The part people miss about climbing gear lifespan is that it applies whether or not the equipment has been used. Nylon and polyester degrade over time through exposure to UV, humidity, and chemicals, so a rope sitting in a cupboard for a decade is not the rope it was when bought.

The authority for any specific item is that manufacturer’s own documentation, which states lifespan and inspection criteria for that product. When in doubt about a piece of gear, retire it. Soft goods have a maximum age regardless of use, typically stated by the manufacturer, and shorter working lifespans with heavy use. Any gear involved in a severe fall, chemical exposure, or visible damage retires immediately regardless of age.

Two Separate Clocks

The first is age. Textile equipment degrades from the date of manufacture, and manufacturers state a maximum lifespan on that basis even for unused gear stored properly.

The second is use. A rope climbed on several times a week wears out long before it reaches its age limit, and the working lifespan for heavy use is far shorter.

Whichever of the two comes first is the answer. A heavily used rope reaching its wear limit at three years retires then, not when it reaches the age limit.

The date of manufacture is what counts rather than the date you bought it, since gear may have sat in a warehouse or on a shop shelf for a considerable time. Most items carry that date printed on a label or tag.

Immediate Retirement Regardless of Age

A severe or high-factor fall

Chemical contact

Battery acid, solvents, bleach, and various other chemicals damage nylon in ways that are invisible. Suspected contact means retirement, since there is no way to inspect for it.

Visible damage

Core showing through a rope sheath, cuts, deep abrasion, glazing from heat, stiff or crunchy sections, or any change in diameter along the length.

Unknown history

What to Inspect and How Often

Ropes should be inspected before and after each use by running the entire length through your hands, feeling for flat spots, soft sections, lumps, or changes in diameter. Sheath damage exposing the core means immediate retirement.

Harnesses need checking at the tie-in points and belay loop, which wear fastest, along with the webbing and stitching. Fuzzing on the surface is normal; damaged stitching or worn tie-in points are not.

Slings and quickdraw dogbones wear where they run over rock or against carabiners. Check for cuts, abrasion, and stiffness.

Metal Versus Textile

Metal hardware does not have a published age limit the way textiles do, because aluminum and steel do not degrade sitting on a shelf.

What retires metal is wear and damage: grooves worn by rope, cracks, corrosion, gates that stick or fail to lock, and deformation.

Dropped hardware is the debated case. A carabiner dropped a long way onto rock may have internal cracks that are invisible, and the conservative approach many climbers and most manufacturers recommend is retiring it. Given the cost relative to the consequence, that caution is reasonable.

Retirement decisions are far simpler when you know what you are deciding about, and almost nobody can remember when they bought a particular sling.

Recording the purchase date and the date of manufacture when gear arrives takes a minute and removes the guesswork years later. A note in your phone is enough.

Logging significant falls matters too, particularly for ropes. A rope that has taken several hard falls is in a different condition from one used only for top roping, and by the time you are deciding you will not remember the difference.

Storage Affects Lifespan

UV exposure is the main enemy of nylon. Gear left in a car with sunlight through the windows, or hung outdoors, degrades faster than the same gear kept in a bag indoors.

Heat compounds it, and a car in summer reaches temperatures well above what manufacturers recommend for storage.
